I replaced the oil pan gasket and I still have a leak. I guess it was something else. I dont really have $2k for a new rear main seal. I’m in trouble.

Normal for an old Audi. They’re supposed to leak a little oil, that’s how you know the crankcase has oil in it.

yea, the problem is that its not just a little....

Look on the bright side: it made some really pretty art on the driveway.

Well it’s all relative

As Click and Clack always said, it couldn’t hurt to try some additives.

Agreed.

Time to trade it in at CarMax

well, now you dont have to change your oil anymore. just keep topping it up........check the pcv system..........

i’ve heard that stuff is no good. It may stop leaks but it also attaches to everything else and is no good for turbos and just leads to additional problems down the road

could that cause a big leak? i only had a couple drops with the car off, it wasnt until I parked at work that I saw the water oil fall under my car

Do you know it’s coming from down low? Valve cover gaskets are a possible leak point. Did the oil pan gasket at least slow it down? If it’s manageable, then just keep topping off. Have you been able to figure out how much you lose? Is it more than a quart over 1000 miles? If not, then I wouldn’t worry about for now. My old man had two town cars that would leak at least that, and he ran one of them 100k miles after the leaks first started. He just always had a case of oil at home and a quart or two in the trunk.
You’ve eliminated one possible source, now you may want to check for other leaks higher up. And also try to quantify the amount leaking per the miles traveled.
Good luck.

Did you wash off the bottom of the car after you were done?, because there might be a lot of oil still just waiting to get shook off/out of the engine compartment.

You going to start shopping for a replacement or you going to try and fix it?

The question is will you have this same car with the same engine by the time it causes problems?

This is very sad.

Ok. So there may be some issues. How about this?
It goes on the outside, so no worries about internal parts, and best of all - it comes in colors!

not really but this wasn’t just residue, this was an active drip after a half hour commute

i dont really know what to do. I think i need to start with asking for a raise.

i think the oil pan gasket i did is holding but it doesn’t seem to have made a difference. I don’t think its the valve cover gaskets. I cant see anything leaking from looking under the hood, only under the car
i dont really want to leave it leaking, its going to make a huge mess. Its only been leaking a few days but its more than i’d be comfortable allowing to go

it is its really stressing me out. I never expected to have this level issue in less than a year. I just looked at my sprteadsheet and after the insurance payout from being rear ended i’m still only $3200 deep and that includes the tires from last january.

Probably a good place to start

the pcv is the “positive crankcase ventilation” system........... it relieves the pressure inside the crankcase.........when it gets stopped up, quits working, etc then the crankcase becomes effectively a ballon. if there is not a lot of pressure, then its not a big deal. if there is a LOT of pressure, then it will eventually try to find the path of least resistance to relieve some of that pressure, whether that is a valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, or one of the crank seals just depends on what is weakest............doesnt hurt to check.......
